Wash-and-Go Tutorial

“How do you get your hair like that?” In reference to my wash-and-go is my most asked question. My answer every time is that it’s just Ecostyler Protein Gel and Dax grease. I am so not a product junkie and I like simple repeatable methods with predictable results because we all know how unpredictable natural hair can be. After 5 years, I finally have a method that is tried and true for a wash-and-go. Like, Comment, Subscribe! XOXO!

I’m Back and I’m Vloggin’!

Hey Hey Hey!

I know I fell off the face of the earth! So much has happened since I last blogged so I’ll summarize…

  1. I finished Cosmetology School November 2015! Woot Woot! Dream Realized!
  2. Worked for a master stylist at a Salon & Spa after graduation…which was pretty exhausting and demoralizing because I’m a leader and I was pretty much his work horse. I resigned, but I would definitely work there again (for myself), I loved the people!
  3. Had a huge bout with depression beginning January 2016, kicked it’s ass around May 2016!
  4. Found my dream job in another spa with the best supervisor I’ve ever had July 2016! Seriously love this job!
  5. A few weeks later I started Massage Therapy School because I want to be a WHOLE BODY specialist. Hair, Skin, Nails and Massage.
  6. FINALLY started my YouTube channel called natural_eye_am! When it comes to beauty it’s so much easier to explain via vlogging instead of blogging.

I’ve been vlogging quite a bit, I have several videos and I’m really enjoying it! Come join me on my channel and don’t forget to like comment and subscribe! XOXO! Thanks for coming back!

Celebrating 27 Years of Life Today!

Tags

It is my 27th Birthday today! I am less excited but more reflective and grateful  to be here. My last two Birthdays were great, for my 25th, I went to New Orleans, a city I absolutely am in love with. For my 26th, I went to Atlanta with my now husband, family and friends and was proposed to which was amazing and emotional. We stayed in a lovely charming Bed and Breakfast in Atlanta called the Shellmont Inn. It was an awesome weekend. This year, my Birthday began last night with a fresh bouquet of flowers, a yummy hunk of cake, chocolates and champagne; a surprise from my husband. It was a humble and cozy Birthday eve with my husband watching CSI episodes on Netflix. I was truly surprised when I walked into the house after class!

Today I am thankful for the little things. I started Cosmetology School, and I’m working toward my dream. I am married to an amazing, smart, and kind man who loves me and we’re living in a lovely home that I get to beautify every once and a while with my DIY and thrift inspired ideas. My spirit is high right now, and that is priceless. So many things I worried about last year have passed away and now there is space for new hopes and dreams. God is good.

Two years ago, I wrote a Blog post and listed my 5 year goals. Some have changed and some have been altogether deleted from my list. With that being said here is a review and revamp 5 year goals:

1. Contunued Spiritual Growth- This goal is ongoing, it will always be something I strive for, what I am currently working on personally, is recognizing my thinking patterns, and how to control my thoughts. Another goal of mine is continually nuturing my spiritual relationship with my husband. When you’re single it’s all about you, but when you are married, there is also your spiritual walk together that impacts your marraige.

2. $30,000 savings before thirty- This goal has changed to BECOME DEBT FREE! I say this because, no amout of money will give you a better life unless you are a good steward over it. My husband and I are working this together and I am so proud of us. We got married, and paid cash for the whole thing; no debt. This was tough considering how emotional planning a wedding is and how easy it is to get caught up in the hype of getting stuff you don’t need to host people who won’t even remember it all after the day is over. We have paid off several thousand dollars of debt to date, do not use credit cards, have created no new bills and are taking a bite out of debt every month. It can be frustrating sometimes, but I have to remind myself that this is a marathon and not a sprint. Slow and steady wins the race, and throwing all of your cash at debt at once puts you in a bind if an emergency comes up. I know this, I’ve been debt free before.

3. Finish Cosmetology School and transition to working for myself. In the last year or so, there has been a yearning in my spirit to put my natural given talent and passion to work. I just can’t sit around any longer waiting a “good” time to start, hence me taking a leap to start Cosmetology School. I want to finish school, build clientel, find a location to establish a salon and WORK FOR MYSELF! I don’t want to do this for money, I want the autonomy to make my own decisions about my career.

4. Own Property- GOAL ACHIEVED! I purchased a home April 2013!

5. Waist Length Hair- I am so excited about this goal, and I think I will definitely get there. My hair is currently mid back length.- ON TRACK!

6. Be More Active in the Stock Market- GOAL ABORTED. I have found that I really don’t have any interest in keeping up with the stock market, so at this time, it a no go for this goal. I will just keep it simple and keep contributing to my IRAs.

7. Teach- I still want to teach, it is another passion of mine. I am thinking about how I can combine my two passions, hair and teaching, and I am playing with the idea of getting my Instructor Training in cosmetology. I think that would be awesome. Two passions combined?! It doesn’t get any better than that!- ONGOING!

8. Send my parents on vacation- Has changed to Appreciate and spend more time with OUR families in general. Since my husband and I have met, we have driven more miles than ever before to spend time with family for so many different reasons. Although sometimes the budget does not permit, I am so happy with what we have been able to do. Our wedding really opened our eyes to the tremendous amount of love our families and friends have for us, and also some who don’t have as much as we thought, but nevertheless we are so thankful for the love we have and will continue to focus our efforts to love on those who love on us.

Keep reaching for the stars y’all!

Cosmetology School: Sculpting

This weekend was a big blur of homework, huge heavy textbooks, workouts with my husband, and cooking. I’m really having to get back into the swing of doing homework, but I’m really hoping that I can get it done in class by following along and filling in my workbook as the instructor teaches. That’s the plan this week.

Last week we studied sculpting hair, also known as cutting hair. To my surprise and delight (my nerdy engineer delight), there is quite a bit of math involved in cosmetology. There are 4 basic cuts that are the foundation of every hair sculpture; The Solid Form, The Graduated Form, The Increase-Layered Form, and The Uniformly-Layered Form.

While performing the solid form, you must hold the hair at 0 degrees after parting each sub section. 0 degrees is basically straight down the back of the neck with the head positioned straight up (no tilt), to the clients desired length. Part, pull hair down, detangle, distribute,  apply tension and sculpt. Other names for the Solid Form are “Dutch Boy” or “Blunt Cut”.

Solid Form

The graduated form is also known as a wedge cut. For this form the hair is held at a 45 degree angle down and out, like towards the stylists belly button with the head positioned straight up (no tilt), to the clients desired length. I love this cut!

 Graduated Form

The Increased Layered Form (increased referring to the change in lengths from the front to back) is the foundation of your haircut with lots of distinct layers or your classic “mullet”. The hair has longer layers underneath and shorter layers on top. The hair sectioned, parted, held straight up from the crown of the head (180 degrees), detangled, distributed and sculpted. This sculpt results in an oval shape.

Increased-Layered Form

The Uniformly Layered Form gives you a round shape sculpt. The hair is held at a 90 degree angle from each curve of the head and sculpted. Also, all of the hair is one length. Kind of like a perfectly round afro for kinky hair that stands straight up. This sculpt gives lots of layers. For guys, this would be used to get your “Justin Bieber” cut.

That’s all for today class! Have a good one!

Starting Cosmetology School Today!

As I write this, my stomach trembles with glee! I start cosmetology school this evening! I am so elated, and I have never been happier about going to school. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration but neither got the emotional reaction from me that starting this journey has gotten. There is something truly amazing about operating in your purpose! I love hair, I love people, I love service, and that is what being a cosmetologist is all about. I have always heard the quote ” Do something you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life”, it’s so cliché but it is beginning to become true and real to me. Will it be a cake walk? I’m sure it won’t, but I am willing and determined and that is half the battle already won.

Hair comes naturally to me, and I love a stylist that has skills because it’s not always easy dealing with the people or heads of hair that sit your chair! A good stylist is also hard to find, it took me seven years to find one who could give me a good wash, blowout and press. I am excited to get the theory, license and education behind the natural ability.

My first investment in my dream is a new pair of comfy shoes to stand in all night at school, my Dansko Clogs. They come highly recommended by nurses who spend all day on their feet. At first, I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to invest $100 in these “not cute” shoes, but I just can’t have aching feet or back pain.  “It’s a small price to pay to avoid varicose veins, foot and back pain” says my husband. We shall see!

I can’t wait to get my kit and scrubs. What naturalista doesn’t love new hair goodies?! I am so excited to share my journey with you all and I am committed to picking back up with my posts to share my knowledge and love for hair! Follow me on instagram @natural_iam !

Peace!

My Wedding Day

Tags

, , ,

Hello, Hello, Hello!!

It feels so great to be blogging again. I’m two days out from having been married two months and I’ve decided it is high time that I come out of the newlywed love cave to post about the wedding, my hair and other musings.

I will start with the wedding planning. I was totally OCD when it came to planning the wedding which isn’t very far from how I am in everyday life. I am a planner and I will lose sleep over the smallest detail. I emailed my coordinator all the time with photos, diagrams and lists. She loved it and it made for smooth sailing the day of.  The venue was a historic home with a natural beauty all its own with its stained glass windows, hardwood floors and sky-high doors. I pretty much DIY’d the whole things because simply put, I am cheap BUT also very crafty and I truly believe I can do anything or at least try. Somethings I DIY’d or semi-DIY’d include save the dates, invitations, escort cards, bouquets, bouts, centerpieces, aisle decor, the guest book..I could go on and on.

I went back and forth as to how I would wear my hair on the big day. At first, I thought I would get it blown out, pressed and then curl wand it the night before preserving the style by pin curling it. The style is gorgeous but the con is that I didn’t know it if would last throughout the night. I believe it would have fallen flat before the reception. The week of the wedding I cancelled my appointment and just jumped out there and decided to do it myself. I was sure I wanted a natural style (and so was my now husband) but I had no plan. On friday night I took a 2 day old twist out and made something so gorgeous and simple and I am so happy I did. I parted  a section off-center toward the right side of my head down to my ear and sectioned it off. The rest of the hair in the back was spritzed with water gelled at the edges and nape of my neck and very carefully smoothed down and tucked/rolled to the right side of my head securing it with about 100 Bobbie pins (seriously, that things was going nowhere). I took the tail end of the roll and made a pin curl above my ear. I then took the top section and did two strand twists add a perm rod to the end of each one. I tied my hair down with a silk scarf and covered it with a bonnet. The day of the wedding, I removed the perm rods, carefully unraveled the twists and fluffed them. I used some closed Bobbie pins to maintain the volume at the top. I added 3 floral pins to the back. Oh and you know I had to have a need a little baby hair! LOL!

My Hair & Life the Last Several Months

Hello World! Look what the cat drug in! ME!

I have been on the go the last several months!

Last time I posted was June so let’s see…I have pretty much been in lovers land and just too preoccupied to post because….I’m getting MARRIED!!! My amazing man proposed to me the weekend of my 26th birthday in September 2013.

IMAG3203

I have been bust planning and doing a lot of traveling because our wedding is out of town which leaves little to no time to post about hair, OR even do my hair for that matter, so for the winter I was rocking blown-out presses. I have blogged in the past about not having or being able to find a stylist which is how and a part of why this blog was born. However, I am happy to report that I have found a fantastic stylist who specializes in natural hair. Hair, Jammie Hickman of Adagio Salon in Huntsville, AL. So far I have only gotten blown-out presses, but I am excited to see what else she can do. Pretty much all winter, I’ve been rocking straight hair because a) I got lazy/ tired/hair fatigue and b) the humidity is decent so my hair style lasted longer.

A pic of myself after I curled my hair using my amazing Jilbere wand and giving my self a proper face beat down! 🙂 I was headed to take engagement pics with my fiance.

I am also happy and GRATEFUL to report that even with my laziness, my hair has managed to grow to Bra Strap Length. I truly believe that this a result of my diet and detangling method. My diet consists of no pork or red meat, only chicken and seafood. I have also been eating a ton of veggies along with juicing. I have been bunning religiously but my detangling game is always on point. My go to products right now are Pantene Relaxed and Natural Shampoo and Conditioner, oh and DAX Grease!!! YES, DAX GREASE!!  After I shampoo and carefully condition, I take a finger full or two and coat the ends of my hair and the lower shaft with DAX. I got this idea from Curly Nikki and it works like a charm!!

Peace and Love Y’all!
